Hormone Therapy

Who Needs Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)?

Unfortunately, almost all of us over the age of 40 (and in some cases over 30) will experience a natural hormonal imbalance. In our daily lives, we are exposed to environmental and dietary toxins which all contribute to the decline of our natural hormones over time. For our own optimal health and wellness, it is important to keep our hormones balanced. Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) allows you to achieve this hormonal balance naturally and safely. However, it is important to note that this can only be done with the help of a highly trained physician. Many factors and conditions can contribute to an imbalance of your hormones, including thyroid disease, metabolic syndrome, and menopause, to name a few. As a result of these conditions or other hormonal imbalances, you may experience one or several of the following symptoms:

  • • Fatigue
  • • Weight gain
  • • Hair loss
  • • Memory loss
  • • Mood swings
  • • Irritability
  • • Sleeplessness
  • • Difficulty concentrating
  • • Low sex drive
  • • Erectile difficulty in men
  • • Orgasmic dysfunction in women
  • • Depression
  • • Hot flashes or night sweats

He will consult with you regarding your current symptoms and tailor a regimen that is best suited to treat those symptoms, all the while keeping in mind that needs and symptoms change and may, over time, require an alteration of your unique hormonal treatment plan.

What are Bio-Identical Hormones?

BHRT involves replacing and supplementing the hormones routinely produced by your own body in order to maintain a healthy, energized body. Bio-Identical hormones are a healthier, safer alternative to synthetically created hormones. These Bio-Identical hormones are plant-based, and an exact chemical match to those made naturally in your body. They have fewer undesirable side effects than their non-Bio-Identical counterparts and are effective for both men and women. Other benefits of Bio-Identical hormones include:

Synthetic hormones, although similar, are not identical to your body’s hormones, and therefore can lead to adverse reactions or long-term health risks. This is a key reason many patients opt for Bio-Identical hormones.
Bio-Identical hormones can be tailored to fit your individual needs, unlike synthetic hormones which come in a standard dosages. This means better relief from the symptoms that you are actually experiencing.
There are also less side effects reported among patients using Bio-Identical hormones. Remember, your regimen can be altered at any time so that you experience few, if any, side effects.

Treatment programs usually consist of replacement of primary hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, melatonin, and DHEA. At your consultation with our physicians, he will conduct a thorough medical history and examination to determine the appropriate hormonal mix to achieve your unique needs. In order to participate in our physicians BHRT program, you will need to:

Give a comprehensive review of your symptoms, past medical history, and family history
   Participate in ongoing evaluations
Be compliant with your BHRT regimen

Some patients may be requested to provide samples for laboratory analysis prior to beginning treatment. Although lab results may provide very useful information if the values are low or borderline low, be assured that our physicians believes in treating the patient instead of treating the paper (lab results). Moreover, many patients have symptoms consistent with a hormone deficiency that the lab tests do not show. our physicians practices Functional Medicine, meaning that he believes it is more important to treat the symptoms than focusing solely on the lab values.

The vast majority of patients are treated with bio-identical pellet hormone replacement therapy. This therapy was first used in 1938 and has a better than 75 year safety history with no report of increased risk for heart attack, stroke, and blood clot (as with oral estrogen or oral testosterone) and no report of increased risk for any type of cancer in men or women. In fact, bio-identical pellet hormone replacement has been used to treat breast cancer in women, prostate cancer in men, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s symptoms. Pellet BHRT is the only method that allows the body to “dose itself” or take what it needs. Individualizing treatment to each patient’s symptoms is one of the major reason’s that our physicians regularly treats patients that have not been happy with other methods of BHRT.

PRP treatments for hair restoration

Hair loss can be psychologically devastating and can lead to low self esteem and depression. Treatment options are limited and include minoxidil and finasteride which have some unpleasant side effects and may not provide the results you are looking for.
PRP -platelet rich plasma- is a relatively new treatment where a small amount of blood is withdrawn from you and processed so that only the platelet rich fraction remains. This liquid gold from your own body contains all the growth factors and nutrients your hair follicles need to grow when re injected back into your scalp. It is an effective non surgical method to restore hair loss that looks very natural suitable for both men and women

Although it is not a popular topic to discuss, sexual dysfunction (a.k.a Psychosexual Dysfunction) is a very common condition that affects millions of men and women and can significantly impair the quality of one’s sex life, self-esteem, and relationships. Sexual dysfunction impacts men and women differently; however, it is generally defined as the inability to experience sexual arousal or sexual satisfaction as a result of a physical disorder and or psychological problems.

Fortunately, innovations in the field of platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy have led to a revolutionary breakthrough in the treatment of sexual dysfunction. PRP’s therapeutic uses in skin rejuvenation (i.e. ‘Vampire Facelift”) fueled the development of two non-invasive sexual dysfunction treatments:

  • ALMI
  • Orgasm-Shot (O-Shot) for women
  • Priapus Shot (P-Shot or M-Shot) for men
  • Prolotherapy
  • Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Although they are both non-invasive procedures, the O-Shot and the P-Shot require proper training to learn the meticulous techniques necessary to achieve a safe and successful outcome. If performed incorrectly, or by a physician who has not been trained and approved to perform these shots, the results could be ineffective and lead to potentially dangerous complications.

As with female sexual dysfunction, male sexual dysfunction can present in different ways—the most common manifestations are as follows:

  • Erectile impotence : inability to sustain an erection.
  • Inhibited male orgasm (ejaculatory impotence) : inability to achieve orgasm inside the woman’s vagina, although he may achieve orgasm.
  • Premature ejaculation : ejaculation occurs before or immediately after entering the vagina.

Patients have been astounded by the benefits of the P-Shot, which can include:

  • Immediate enlargement of the penis: approximately 10-20% increase in length and girth.
  • Straightening and strengthening of the penis.
  • Heightened circulation within the penis for a healthier, stronger orgasm.
  • Can be used as a supplement to boost the effects of other therapies (i.e. Viagra, Cialis).
  • Increase in pleasure and sensation during intercourse.
  • Can be used to treat erectile dysfunction resulting from medical conditions such as Peyronie’s disease and prostate cancer.
  • The Priapus-Shot® utilizes your body’s own fluids, which means there is no risk of allergic reaction.
  • There is no lumpiness and minimal pain associated with this technique.

The P-Shot procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis and involves the following steps:

  • A numbing cream (lidocaine) is applied to the penis.
  • Blood is drawn from the arm (similar to a typical blood test).
  • The blood is transferred to a centrifuge so the platelets can be isolated and transferred to a separate test tube where they can now be classified as platelet rich plasma.
  • A few drops of calcium chloride solution are added to the platelet rich plasma to initiate their wound healing response.
  • The platelets release growth factors into the liquid of the tube.
  • The PRP liquid is placed into a syringe and injected into the penis with a tiny needle, using a technique that allows for optimal distribution of the PRP growth factors.

Female sexual dysfunction can occur at any phase of life (although it is more common in post-menopausal women) and it impacts each woman differently. The most common forms of female sexual dysfunction are:

  • Sexual arousal disorder : patients can still experience desire for sex, but struggle to become aroused or maintain arousal during sexual activity.
  • Low sexual desire : lack of sex drive, diminished libido.
  • Sexual pain disorder (dyspareunia): patients experience discomfort during vaginal contact and/or sexual stimulation
  • Orgasmic disorder : recurrent difficulty achieving orgasm even after experiencing sexual arousal and stimulation.

The O-Shot is an outpatient procedure that takes approximately 10 minutes and involves the following steps:

  • A topical numbing cream is applied to the vagina and the arm.
  • Blood is drawn from the arm (similar to a typical blood test.
  • The blood is placed into a centrifuge to isolate the platelet rich plasma (PRP), which contains the growth factors necessary to stimulate the growth of new, healthy vaginal tissue.
  • The PRP is injected into the upper vagina and clitoris using a very thin needle (these areas have been numbed so the patient will feel no discomfort during the injection).
  • After being injected into crucial areas of the vagina and clitoris, the regeneration of healthy cells begins and the vaginal tissue is gradually revitalized and rejuvenated.

Patients have reported the following benefits after the treatments of sexual dysfunction for women :

  • Increased sexual desire
  • Heightened sensitivity and arousal from clitoral stimulation
  • Tighter vaginal skin and vaginal opening (introitus)
  • Rejuvenation of the vaginal lips (vulva)
  • Stronger and more frequent orgasms
  • Increased ability to have a vaginal orgasm
  • Reduced discomfort during intercourse for those women suffering from dyspareunia (pain during intercourse)
  • Decreased urinary incontinence
  • Reduction in vaginal dryness , enhanced vaginal lubrication
  • Can be used to improve symptoms associated with medical conditions such as: vulvodynia, interstitial cystitis, uterine prolapse, and vaginismus
